Dear Minister Elliott,
Well over a year into this pandemic, I must tell you how completely ignored and unsupported I am by your government as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).
While our duties overlap 90% with RNs, we’re paid just cents on the dollar that they earn. And while we’re denied fair wages, we’re also denied any payment or continuation of wages for lost time when isolating because of COVID-19.
Like other underpaid health care workers in Ontario, your government has decided to exclude RPNs like me from receiving pandemic pay while the crisis rages on. RPNs, like hardworking personal support workers, deserve greater financial security when called upon to fight this war.
I am sending this email asking you to take the necessary steps to ensure all nurses and health care staff receive:
- Vaccinations at their place of work
- Pandemic pay of $4 per hour
- Pay for any time required to isolate as a result of COVID-19
It’s time to support RPNs in Ontario.
