Rallies against contract over-rides draw hundreds

The first 3 of 25 rallies organized by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions/CUPE and CUPE Ontario kicked off in Pembroke, Brockville and Cornwall August 17, 18 and 19.

The rallies were very well attended for protests held at mid-day. They take place at the offices of the local Member of Provincial Parliament.

In July, the Ontario government extended emergency orders indefinitely which over-ride the contracts of over 500,000 workers in health and social services, and some municipal services.

OCHU/CUPE has also put employers on notice that any exercise of emergency powers can only happen in an institution with COVID-19 cases.

OCHU/CUPE, SEIU and Unifor take Ontario to court over access to the N-95 mask

Three unions have filed an application in divisional court which challenges the province of Ontario’s restrictive view of how the COVID-19 virus is transmitted and how N-95 masks are given to health care workers.

The application from OCHU/CUPE, SEIU and Unifor is backed by expert epidemiological testimony which supports the view that COVID-19 should be treated as a virus which is airborne, not just in aerosolizing procedures as the province of Ontario directs.

Papers were filed Aug. 21.
